Food Product Characterisation Service
The latest
addition is an exiting new 75 m2 laboratory facility consisting of
up to date equipment.
The analytical food laboratory enables the characterisation and compositional assessment of food products to be carried out, assisting in a better understanding of processing technology, techniques and product performance in the market place.
The laboratory has also provided research into product and ingredient functionality within food systems.
Current projects include:
- Assessing the foam and frothing stability in milk
- Assessment of functional foods for people suffering from diabetes or obesity
- Assessment of functional foods for heart and gut health
- Characterisation of food waste oils as bio-fuels
- Assessment of the characteristics of chilled meat texture
- Determining process end point of air dried meat products
With a working space of 75m2 and whole range of analytical equipment the new FTC’s analytical laboratory is equipped to meet the requirements of many research projects.

With the aid of the equipment above we can determine water activity & moisture levels in a range of product, provide accurate values of texture analysis and salt levels in a range of foods. The equipment also provides us with a means of monitoring the air content within samples to ensure freshness and quality and give details on chemical content in a range of dairy product.
Latest additions to our increasing laboratory facilities includes…
• FOSS SOTEC & KJELTEC 2100 SYSTEM DISTILLATION UNIT
For the determination of fat and protein levels within a range of sample solids or liquids.
We also have access to HPLC, GCMS, LCMS, NMR and IR spectroscopy.
Today, FTC can justifiably claim to have achieved a great deal towards meeting
many of the problems facing the industry. With the large new extension having
just been brought into use, the pace of the continued innovation is set to
accelerate.
